What is Stone Paper?

Stone Paper is a product similar to plain paper with very similar capabilities, which was first invented in the 1990s by Long Meng Technology (TLM) and introduced to the world market.
The main ingredient of this type of paper is stone powder (calcium carbonate). In the production of stone paper, no tree is cut down and water are not wasted, so this type of paper is also called environmentally friendly paper.
Stone powder is supplied from the waste of stone factories and stone mines, which have a great abundance and the final product is returnable to nature at the end of its survival path.

The advantages of stone paper include the following:

  • It is resistant to tearing and like ordinary paper does not tear easily.
  • It is also resistant to fire and burns slowly.
  • It is resistant to water and moisture and acts as insulation.
  • It is resistant to insects and insects can not harm it.
  • It has a very high printability.
  • It is very soft and delicate and is suitable for luxury printing and advertising.
  • It has a great variety of uses and can be used in most areas like ordinary paper.
  • It is 100% nature friendly.
Types of stone paper

In addition to the above, there are other benefits:

  1. The non-granular texture of stone paper makes its surface softer and flatter than the surface of ordinary paper and does not require additional printing services such as cellophane or laminate.
  2. The main source of raw materials is mining waste or marble slabs that are ground and turned into stone powder. Stone paper does not use water, acids, brightening agents like Optical brightening agents (OBAs), which are mainly environmental pollutants.
  3. This paper is the product that has the least adverse effects on the planet Earth. Stone paper production is an environmentally friendly process that does not use water in this process and will not cause any air pollution.
  4. Stone paper can be used in solid ink printing machines such as offset, letterpress and flexo, however, it does not respond well to high-temperature laser printers.

It has features such as tear resistance, water insulation, degreasing, ability to write on stone paper under water, fire and flame resistance, washable, sun recyclability and many others.
stone paper is not just an alternative product in some industries, it has placed it in a higher position than other conventional papers or polymer films.

stone paper printing guide

Stone paper printing can be easily done using common printing methods and machines. In addition, these papers have waterproof properties like synthetic papers. Please note that the following is just a guide, and given that the settings between different printers and operators can be different, trial and error in achieving an acceptable quality must be done by the printer operator.

Printing on RPD, RBD papers

stone paper printing guide
  • Plain and plant-based inks are suitable for printing on RPD and RBD papers.
  • Print speeds for dark / solid colors are 7,500 to 8,000 pages per hour and more than 9,000 pages for lighter colors.
  • Adjust the feed / water feed to 21 and 115 ratio.
  • Set the compound feed to 40 and the ratio to 116.
  • Drying powder should be set at levels 4 to 6, depending on the type of work.
  • The surface of RPD and RBD dries immediately after printing.
  • For complete drying of RPD and RBD and preparation for post-printing operations and further printing, please wait about 1 hour after light color printing or 6 hours after dark color printing.
  • When stacking printed paper, please replace the required (middle) separating plates or avoid stacking large amounts of printed stone paper on top of each other.
  • To minimize ink stagnation on paper, please maintain at least 40% relative humidity. Anti-static equipment such as air ionization units in the feeder or delivery is preferred but not necessary.
  • Please clean all four sides of the paper when higher quality printing is required.

Types of stone paper

The main constituents of stone paper are calcium carbonate, which contains up to 80% of stone paper, all of which are supplied by many minerals that are naturally and abundantly present in nature. Another main material used in paper composition is heavy polyethylene stone. Due to the change in the percentage of ingredients, density and type of application in different industries, stone paper is currently divided into four general groups:

  • Stone paper type SP
  • Stone paper type RP
  • Stone paper type RB
  • Stone paper type ST

Each of the above user groups has its own characteristics. In the field of traditional paper, the division is based on “heat”, but in the field of stone paper, it is based on “thickness” (microns), and the density coefficient for stone paper is different in different grades. For example, in grade SP, the density is 1, in grade ST and RB, the density is 1.5, and in grade RP, the density is 1.2.

Of course, it is necessary to explain that at present, efforts are being made in the factory to reduce the density of all grades by maintaining the quality of stone paper. In some cases, the relevant experts in the factory have succeeded in producing stone paper with a density of 0.8, which is very suitable for publishing. Application of SP papers in the IML label industry

IML or In-Mold Labeling means labeling inside the mold at the same time as producing the container by injection, pneumatic or thermoforming. In containers produced by this method, the label becomes an integral part of the container body. This method has many advantages over conventional labeling methods such as direct printing on dishes, adhesive back labels and other older methods.

In the process of producing containers by IML method, first the label produced with the same polymeric material or compatible with the container material is transferred into the mold by the robot and then the process of injection or extrusion of plastic materials is done. In this way, with the help of molten material, the label and the plastic container are integrated with each other, so that the label can no longer be separated from the body of the container in any way.
The main difference between Common labels and IML labels is that the conventional labels are placed on the surface of a plastic container but the IML label becomes part of the wall container.

Application of SP papers in the IML label industry
